Where to set off from

St Kitts for the driving, Nevis for the quiet, Basseterre for the walk.

A volcano at one end and a two mile sandbar at the other, a Georgian capital in between, and a sister island close enough to see the roofs. Six places to book from, and the best day out in each.

Overland

Round the island, up the crater, or off the road entirely.

St Kitts is sixty eight square miles with one ring road, a mountain in the middle and cane tracks running off both sides. Three ways to cover it, what each costs to board, and how much of the day it eats.

Out of Port Zante

The Narrows is two miles wide and most of the good days cross it.

Catamarans out of Port Zante for Nevis, snorkel stops on the reef off Shitten Bay, speedboats down the peninsula to Cockleshell. The channel between the two islands is calm enough that almost nobody gets sick on it.

Every boat day out
Fares and prices

What a day out on St Kitts actually costs.

Every tour on the site, grouped by price. Plenty of the best hours on these islands cost less than lunch at a resort.

Under $50

Town walks, beach transfers, short peninsula runs and the half day loops that leave after breakfast.

$50 to $150

The standards: full island tours, the crater hike, catamaran days and the Nevis crossing.

$150 and up

Private drivers, chartered boats, the railway with the drinks car, and the once a trip splurges.

Kittitian only

Three things you can only do on St Kitts.

Beaches and rum punch turn up on every island in the chain. A working colonial railway, a fortress the British called the Gibraltar of the West Indies and a crater you climb down into do not.

Narrow gauge

The St Kitts Scenic Railway

Thirty inches between the rails, laid between 1912 and 1926 to haul cane from the estates down to the factory at Basseterre. The factory closed in 2005 and the line kept running, now with double deck carriages and a bar. It clings to the north coast on steel trestles over the guts, which is the part nobody expects.

Eight hundred feet up

Brimstone Hill Fortress

Enslaved Africans cut and hauled the volcanic stone for more than a century to build this, and British gunners held it until a French siege in 1782 took it in a month. The bastions still look down on Sandy Point and, on a clear morning, across to Saba, Statia, St Barths and Nevis at once.

Into the cone

The Mount Liamuiga Crater

The Kalinago name means fertile land, and the summit is at 3,792 feet under cloud most afternoons. The walk up goes through old estate land into rainforest and then onto a rim you can rope down into, where the crater floor holds its own small forest and a warm lake after heavy rain.

Lock these in

Four bookings on these islands that will not wait.

Most of St Kitts can be arranged over breakfast at the hotel. These four run on ferry timetables, guide numbers and a cruise schedule that decides how busy the whole island is that morning.

  1. 01St.Kitts Volcano Hike To Mt. Liamuiga (Highest Peak On Island)Crater guides take small groups and start before seven to beat the cloud. There are only a handful of them on the island.
  2. 02Sugar Train Tour & Drinks|Pick-Up &Drop Off From Cruise PortThe railway runs a set number of departures a week, timed around ships in port. Miss the run and the next one may be days away.
  3. 03Nevis Getaway with Free Time at Pinney’s BeachA Nevis day is built around the ferry or a charter across The Narrows. Both leave when they leave.
  4. 04St. Kitts Full-Day Catamaran Cruise to NevisOne boat, a fixed number of seats, and the whole ship crowd wanting the same afternoon.
Ships in port

When four ships are in, the island splits in two.

Basseterre takes about eight thousand passengers on a heavy morning and almost all of them go to the same four places. The other half of St Kitts stays as quiet as it is in September. Head up into the forest, along the windward coast, or onto the ferry.

Two islands, one plan
Four days, in order

Basseterre, the fortress, the peninsula, the crater, then Nevis.
